The Clio Cup action resumes at Misano

After a short break, the Clio Cup is back in action this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli (Italy). The battles promise to be particularly intense once again on the shores of the Adriatic as the competitors in Clio Cup Italia will be keen to excel on home turf despite the Clio Cup Europe leader entry!

06 June 2022

The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli is ready to host nearly thirty contenders for the win at its traditional meeting on the Clio Cup Italia calendar. The Italian track with its long straights and challenging corners often puts on an entertaining show and there will be plenty of scraps among the many protagonists who want to win on home soil and their European rivals who have come to challenge them.

Can Jelmini keep the momentum going?

Felice Jelmini (PMA Motorsport) scored a brace of victories in the season-opener at Imola and heads to Misano atop the general classification. Already victorious at Misano in 2018 and 2019, the leader hopes to enjoy similar success with the fifth-generation Clio Cup to pull away from his pursuers led by Gabriele Torelli (Faro Racing).

Torelli, who was the best Italian in Clio Cup Europe last year at Misano, is eager to use his experience to regain the advantage over his rival. However, there is no lack of ambitious contenders, including Challengers Cristian Ricciarini (Essecorse) and Giacomo Trebbi (MC Motortecnica). After spraying the champagne at Imola, they will be ever more ambitious as the former won twice at Misano in 2020 while the latter showed his speed scoring one pole position in that same year.

After finishing just off the podium at Imola, Sandro Soubek (Mair Racing Osttirol) is out for revenge, but the Austrian driver will also face stiffer competition as Paolo Felisa (Pma Motorsport) and Diego Cassarà (Faro Racing) will be starting their campaign while Pietro Blumetti (PMA Motorsport) is about to make his Clio Cup debut.

Challengers ready for the fight

Challengers Cup leader Cristian Ricciarini has experience on his side to race for victory and put the hammer down within the category. However, his hopes could be compromised by Giacomo Trebbi and Cosimo Papi (Scuderia Costa Ovest), who will target his first success after his two podiums at Imola. The fast and spectacular Lorenzo Nicoli (Progetto E20 Motorsport) will also be looking to get back into the title race this weekend.

Meanwhile, Jacopo Giuseppe Cimenes (Essecorse), William Mezzetti (Progetto E20 Motorsport) and Alessio Alcidi (Tuder Motorsport) will battle valiantly while Sandro Cutini (Proteam Race), Gianalberto Coldani (MC Motortecnica) and Damiano Puccetti (PMA Motorsport) are looking to reignite their title bids after a disappointing weekend in Imola.

Suspense on the boil among the Gentlemen

With six different drivers on the podium in the opening two races, the Gentlemen Drivers Cup should be a wide-open affair as the two Imola race winners, Alex Lancellotti and Vittorio Zadotti, are skipping Misano. Third on equal points, Luciano Gioia (Essecorse) and Andrea Cordini (Oregon Team) will try to make the most of the situation to take the lead, but their rivals will do everything to stop them.

Others will hope to rack up the points. Fifth in the general classification, just ten points adrift of the leader, Quinto Stefana (Milan Competition)  aims for a first win that would allow him to move up to the sharp end of the order. Daniele Pasquali (Tuder Motorsport) and Due (Oregon Team) are also determined to get good results after a half-hearted start to the season. Lastly, veteran Massimiliano Ciocca (Faro Racing) will make his debut in the fifth-generation Clio Cup, as will category newcomer Francesco Cosentino (Scuderia Costa Ovest).

Journalists Paolo Tognon and Dario Pennica will drive the #333 Clio Cup in the Press League while Nicolas Milan (Milan Compétition) completes the field. The winner of the last race at Misano and current Clio Cup Europe leader is not eligible to score points in Clio Cup Italia but will be racing to support Alessandro Alcidi and Quinto Stefana and prepare his future meetings.

Scheduled for Saturday at 2.55 pm and Sunday at 2.20 pm, the two races from the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will be streamed live on the Renault Clio Series Facebook page and the Renault Clio Series YouTube channel.
